Slight Aesthetic Changes

I ended up not having to work last night after all, so I laid in bed with Sandro most of the night, and today I made some minor aesthetic changes to the site:

  • Related posts now show up on my single post pages before comments
  • Links on the right at the top of the sidebar have new images
  • Favicon (okay, I did this yesterday)
  • A few blogs on the blogroll went bye-bye

How To Create A Favicon For Your Wordpress Blog

The first step can apply to any blogging software or service (Wordpress, Blogger, Drupal. TypePad, Mambo, etc.) but the inserting of the HTML code may be in a different place for you. Either way, if you find your template which contains your <head> </head> tags you should be fine.

Step 1: Make your favicon.

It’s really not that hard. Go to Favicon from Pics and select an image file on your computer to upload, and a few seconds later you have a favicon. I chose a simple image with “JL” in it that I made, but you can choose more complex images such as photos. Favicon from Pics even lets you add scrolling text or animate the favicon.

Step 2: Upload your favicon.

With Wordpress, the best place is in the main /Wordpress folder on your hosting server. Just drop it in.

Step 3: Add the code.

pres
Login to your Wordpress Admin area, go to Presentation, and choose the Theme Editor for your theme.

header

Choose the header.php file to edit…this is the template file which contains the <head> tags in it.

insert the following code anywhere between your <head> and </head> tags:

<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”favicon.ico”>

That’s it!

firefoxbar

Category Cloud

I replaced the drop down Category menu with a Cloud for now, but I think I like it better. It crams more content into more space, and doesn’t bog the eyes down doing it. I may convert most of my categories to tags since Wordpress supports them with 2.3, and keep only a few categories to cover those tags.

Almost beating last month’s traffic–Down to the wire!

My only goal for this month’s visitor traffic was to beat last month’s. Even though I’m right down tot he wire here, and I know that I haven’t been browsing around and commenting much lately, I’m only 33 hits away from it. I hate to micro-manage, but shit people come on! :-D

For those of you who use Wordpress I found a great plugin called FireStats that lets you view your visitor stats right from your Wordpress backend. It covers the total page views, views today, visits, visits today, top ten of referrers (thanks Troystopher for being my number one this month btw), recent visitors’ IPs, search terms (why does Google tell people about my blog when they’re looking for A Boy’s Life…in Utah?!), popular pages, countries, OS, and a detailed hits table. It won’t break down daily, weekly, or monthly detailed stats like virtually all web host backends do, but it’s nice to have nonetheless.

Tinkering with Wordpress

I love Wordpress. When I first started blogging in 2003 I used Greymatter, then it died. Then I used Mambo (two installations, one for my blog, the other for freelance web design I was doing), then that died. Ever since I have been using Wordpress things have gone fairly smoothly (unless you count that time my web host tried to upgrade their databases and found out that all of the backups were corrupted…that was fun).

Lately, and I hadn’t noticed it until recently, the “Previous” and “Next” page links at the bottom weren’t showing in any browsers except on my Windows Mobile device (using the WP-PDA plugin). Once I realized it I was fairly annoyed because I usually like to read back in blogs I find and others have not been able to easily do this on my site. I started at the Wordpress forums and read through a bunch of posts before finding that the Adhesive plugin interferes with them. Now that I disabled that plugin it’s fine.

I also modified the single post template to include a links to the next and previous posts.

I’ve been thinking of changing the theme for the last few days and wanted input. Do we like the lighter theme or should I switch back to something darker? Is the general layout okay? Respond bitches!

JL Mobile

If you’re anything like me you read a lot from your mobile device. While Pocket IE is a great browser to read on the go, often web sites and their designers do not take into account the fact that images, Flash content, and those million rotating ads won’t load very quickly. I personally love it when designers aim for quick loading times.

Today I installed WP-PDA, a Wordpress plugin which renders the web site in a very friendly view for mobile devices. It doesn’t redirect the browser to a mobile version of the site, it just uses a modified mobile-friendly CSS style. It allows searching posts, category browsing, protected post access, and commenting.

This is how it looks on my T-Mobile Dash running Windows Mobile 6.

Of course, most of the blogs I read also have RSS feeds that I read through Newsbreak.

Now Fully Back, catching up

Jakeslife.net is now fully back up. For the past week it’s been either down or short of several entries. Once I got it back up Wordpress was having some issues finding everything due to an upgrade. Anyways, that’s all fixed now. I’ve restored all of my posts, although many have been protected now. If you need the password and aren’t a douche, let me know.

Sandro gets back from Peru next week, and I can’t wait to see him. We’ve been sending video messages back and forth from our phones via e-mail since text messages are about $4 per for Peru. Nasty. He’s also been taking pictures of some sights in Lima. I also switched up my schedule some to spend more time with him when he gets back.

Upgraded my Dash to Windows Mobile 6. Good stuff, even though WM6 leaves me wanting to ditch my Smartphone for a PDA, like the new T-Mobile Wing. The only real difference is touch screen and screen real estate, but my Dash works great for me right now.

Mint, a new free online personal finance manager is in “Elite Beta” right now ad I can’t wait until it opens. It looks like it’s going to blow most others out of the water. Well, right now there aren’t many others out there. Sure, I have online banking, but I am in the process of figuring out how to track everything I do on my laptop on my mobile device. So far, financial software is lacking for Windows Mobile aside from basic checkbook apps. A web solution would be great if it displays right on my device’s browser.

I’m almost done with this school term too. I finished my rough draft for my Effective Writing II final (148/150), which can be viewed along with the final draft at Scribd.

Well, off to another night in paradise.

Breakfast out of bed Pt. 1

This morning I met up with someone for quasi-breakfast at Starbucks. We both work nights and were chatting on the evil entity known as Gay.com beforehand. It was kind of a spur-of-the-moment type thing, definitely not planned. He seems like a cool guy, definitely seems well adjusted for our age, very similar views on certain things that I hold near and dear to my life. We know a few people in common, but nothing that can’t be worked through (j/k).

I updated Wordpress to 2.1, and I’ve started using Windows Live Writer for my blog. I used to use w. Bloggar to post from Windows. For a Microsoft program it’s pretty feature rich, although one thing I would love to see is a way to use password protection through Wordpress (currently I have to either write it through the Wordpress dashboard or publish it in WLW then change it). I’ve also started using Box.net, an online file storage service.

Well, I’m back at work tonight, so off to bed I go.
